Brake welcomes Government road safety announcement
Brake, the road safety charity is welcoming the announcement today by Associate Minister for Transport Julie Anne Genter that the Government will look at introducing Vision Zero and work towards zero deaths and serious injuries on roads.
Caroline Perry, Brake's NZ director said: "We're really pleased to hear this announcement, particularly the inclusion of Vision Zero and the recognition that no death on our roads is acceptable. This announcement, and the Draft Policy Statement on Land Transport create an opportunity to significantly improve safety on our roads. There are proven measures that reduce deaths and serious injuries that New Zealand has been slow to implement, including safer speeds, infrastructure such as median barriers to prevent head-on crashes and better minimum safety standards for vehicles."
The charity is urging local government representatives who attended the summit to also take action locally to prevent more road deaths and injuries.
Ms Perry, who spoke at the summit about the impact road crashes have on families said: "We want to see action from this summit, for local leaders to talk to their communities, investigate what can work for their towns and region, and implement measures locally to save lives."
