Brake welcomes target for reduction in road casualties in Auckland

Brake, the road safety charity is welcoming the ATAP plan released by the Government and Auckland City Council today, particularly the inclusion of a target 60% reduction in deaths and serious injuries by 2027.

Caroline Perry, Brake's NZ director said: "Auckland has seen a shocking increase in road deaths and serious injuries over the last five years, so we applaud the inclusion of this targeted reduction in the plan. Road crashes have devastating consequences for families, and cost our economy and society billions of dollars each year. We must reduce the number of people being killed and suffering life-changing injuries on our roads."

The charity supports the investment of over $900 million in safety improvements and is calling for a significant amount to be targeted towards 50km/h zones, where 70% of deaths and serious injuries occur, particularly impacting more vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Ms Perry says: "We're pleased to see evidence-based measures being included in this plan, such as lower speed limits and safety cameras. It's widely publicised internationally that lower speeds, separated cycle lanes and safe crossing points help to protect the most vulnerable road users, so we need these measures in place to save lives."

Brake also supports the increased investment in public transport and active travel modes.

"Walking and cycling have significant benefits for our health and the environment. An efficient public transport system helps to relieve congestion and people using it to arrive at their destination less stressed than when driving." Ms Perry said.
