Sign up to the Brake Pledge
Whether you are a driver or don't drive, an adult or child, you can sign the Brake Pledge to stop dangerous driving and help put an end to the appalling carnage caused by drivers.
Slow: If I drive, I Pledge to stay within speed limits, and drive at 30kph or lower in town, and slow down on rural roads too. I will avoid overtaking and hang back.
If I don't drive, I Pledge to remind drivers to slow down so they can stop in time in an emergency.
Sober: If I drive, I Pledge to driver sober. If I'm driving, I won't drink any alcohol, or take any illegal drugs or medication that can affect my driving.
If I don't drive, I Pledge to do all I can to prevent impaired driving, for example by not giving drivers alcohol or drugs.
Sharp: If I drive, I Pledge to drive alert, not tired, ill or stressed, get a good night's sleep before driving and take regular breaks. I will have an eye test at least every two years and wear glasses or contact lenses as needed.
If I don't drive, I Pledge to try to stop people who are tired, ill or can't see properly from driving, and ask drivers to take regular breaks.
Silent: If I drive, I Pledge never to use my phone at the wheel even on hands-free. I will turn my phone off and put it out of reach.
If I don't drive, I Pledge to tell drivers to never use their phone at the wheel, and will never distract a driver if I'm a passenger.
Secure: If I drive, I Pledge I will always belt up and insist everyone in my vehicle belts up, and adjust head restraints. I will drive a modern, well maintained vehicle.
If I don't drive, I Pledge I will only get in vehicles with modern seat belts and good crash protection. If I am a child, I will only get in a car with a suitable child restraint.
Sustainable: If I drive, I Pledge I will try to reduce my driving when I can by using public transport, cycling or walking if it's safe, or deciding not to go.
If I don't drive, I Pledge to explain to others the value and benefits of not driving, and encourage alternatives.
